We live in such a hurried life. We want things instantly. I found myself today losing my patience because the fax machine wasn’t working fast enough. And as I realized what I was thinking, it made me laugh. Is a fax not fast enough? I find myself tapping my fingers while watching the seconds go by on the microwave wishing it would hurry up. The drive thru window at the restaurant is never quick enough and I always choose the wrong express lane to get in at the grocery store. And on my Monday morning hour-long travel to work, I always get behind drivers that are still out on their Sunday drive.
Why is it we are always in a hurry? Hurry to walk...hurry to talk...go to school...drive...date...graduate...go to college...marry...have children...retire and so on!
We also think that when we get to those places, we will be happy....that the train has finally pulled into the station and we have arrived!
What we don’t realize is it’s not about the destination.... it’s about finding joy in the journey along the way. This is our one and only chance at living life...here and now!
Opportunities come and then they are gone. We miss the moment we’re in because we’re hurrying on to the next thing.
Ever found yourself on Monday wishing it were Friday and that happening every week? I think that the longer we live the more we realize our time here is actually very brief. Don’t let the important moments of today pass you by as you plan for that non-existent future when you’ll have time to do all that you want to do.
One of my favorite sayings is...”Wherever you are...Be There!!” Be aware today of your thoughts. Are you present in the moment or are you thinking of what you’re going to do tonight, tomorrow, or next week? Are you aware of that child who wants you to listen to her story? Are you putting your newspaper down and giving that wife your undivided attention? Are you stopping and sitting down by that grandfather who would love to tell you the stories of the “good old days?”
Let me encourage you today my friend, to not only stop and smell the roses...but to linger and delight in the fragrances that it brings into your life.
May your journey be joyful!
